MusicTenebrae 2019: Cherubini's Requiem in C Minor

Join Portico’s community choir, The NewQuay Singers, in our annual Tenebrae Service to mark Good Friday. Dating from the 4thC, in this mystical service the Gospel of St Matthew from Christ’s arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane to his death at Golgotha, is divided into a series of “Shadows”. Interspersed between these the choir sings movements from Cherubini’s Requiem. As the service progresses the lighting is gradually dimmed until in complete darkness the last passage is read and the great Strepitus sounded as the ‘..the veil of the temple was rent in twain’. The choir sings the final movement and the congregation then leaves in silence. A dramatic and emotional celebration of the events of Good Friday. This year the narrator is the actor and director Ian McElhinney (Game of Thrones, Derry Girls, and much much more!)

Cherubini's Requiem was composed to commemorate the death of Louis XVI and first performed in 1819. It became one of the most significant requiems of the 19th century. Beethoven, Brahms and Schumann all admired the piece's complex compositional structure and mastery of the form.
