Bookings are made with Ticketsolve and will incur a booking fee.
Join us at Portico for a unique evening marking the launch of JJ Tohill’s latest book “The Upper Ards: An Exploration" by J.J. Tohill. Alongside a film show celebrating Portaferry Gala from 1978 to 2017 the evening will celebrate the people, places and stories that have shaped this distinctive part of County Down, incluing a tribute to Joe Tomelty, whose life and work remain an important part of the area’s cultural heritage.
J.J. Tohill’s book is a major new contribution to the history of the Upper Ards, taking readers on a journey from the Megalithic era through the centuries and exploring the lives, traditions and events that have shaped this often overlooked, but deeply valued, corner of County Down. Richly illustrated with superb colour photographs, detailed maps and drawings the book also brings together many lesser-known stories and local insights that will be new even to many local readers. Copies of the book will be available to purchase on the night at the special launch price of £18.
Gerard Lennon, Chair of the Upper Ards Historical Society, has warmly congratulated J.J. Tohill on his publication describing it as an outstanding account of the history of the Upper Ards. He praises the book as a labour of love, reflecting both deep knowledge and a clear passion for preserving local heritage. Paul Clements has also commended the book as an attractive and richly produced volume, full of quirky stories that will be new to many readers. He notes in particular the strength of the Joe Tomelty chapter and The Golfer’s Alphabet, and praises the way the book does justice to the towns and villages of this often under appreciated and beautiful area.
The accompanying film will look back on Portaferry Gala between 1978 and 2017, capturing the spirit of the event and the community memories attached to it across four decades.
All proceeds will go to the De Paul Society and the Salvation Army.
